John S. Watson (born October 1956) is an American businessman. He served as the chief executive officer and chairman of the board of the Chevron Corporation from January 1, 2010 to January 31, 2018.[1][2][3]
Biography
[edit]John S. Watson was born in California in 1956.[2] In 1978, he graduated with a B.A. in Agricultural Economics from the University of California, Davis, and in 1980 he received an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.[2][3]
In 1980, he joined the Chevron Corporation. He served as its chief financial officer from 2001 to 2005.[1][2] From 2009 to 2010, he was Vice-chairman of the board.[1][2] Since 2010, he has served as chairman and CEO.[1][2]
He also serves as chairman of the board of the American Petroleum Institute, and on the board of directors of Caltex, Dynegy (2001–2004), the National Petroleum Council, the Business Council, the Business Roundtable, JPMorgan International Council, the American Society of Corporate Executives, and the Animal Rescue Foundation.[1][2][3]

John Watson was born in Williams, Colusa County, California. In 1913 he received a BS degree in Irrigation Engineering from the University of California after spending three years at Berkeley and one year at Davis. While at Berkeley he became a member of the honorary agricultural fraternity, Alpha Zeta.
John and his brother, E.C., owned a dairy herd in Dixon from 1912 to 1915. John continued to operate it on his own until 1918.
Starting in 1925 John built up one of the finest dairy herds in the Petaluma area. After a number of years he turned over operation of this herd to his sons. From 1943 to 1951 he devoted his time and energy to the State Board of Agriculture.
John Watson cooperated in the establishment of the artificial breeding organization in Petaluma. He was the principal author of the Milk Stabilization and Marketing Act. Under Presidents Roosevelt and Truman he was advisor to the United States Department of Agriculture.
In 1959 he was appointed president of the State Board of Agriculture and served as a Regent of the University of California. During this time he was also a member of the State Chamber of Commerce.
