Deepu Karunakaran is an Indian writer and director, who has made his contribution to the Malayalam film industry. He is the son of late Karunakaran Nair and Usha K. Nair. He has one sibling, Suchitra Murali, who is a prominent actress in the Malayalam film industry and is settled in the US. In one of his interviews, he stated that his father has acted in a movie at the age of 10 and was his biggest support and always had a positive attitude about his career in the film industry. His father has also done film financing. He also said that his sister is the best critic for his movies.

Deepu loves reading books, usually classics of Malayalam authors. He recalls in one of his interviews that director ‘Priyadarshan’ was the one who told him to read a lot of books as it is one of the most important traits of a director and it will help him become good at direction.
